What a great night we had at the weekly Cabana Cafe Sunday Jam!

By: Nora Wixted-Hogue

Blue Lew, Ted and I were SO EXCITED when Jim Remsburg brought in his Upright Electric Bass!!! She's a beauty! Jim told me that he brought his other bass, too, because "you can't play much rock and roll on the upright" - WHOA!!! Was he WRONG!!! Sitting next to him on stage (we do need a bigger one!), I could feel his fingers flying all over the fretboard and if he wasn't rockin' and rollin' then something was amiss with all those people getting so far down on his groove! (He never did break out his other axe...) Lew gave him the nickname "Dr. Thump" and we think we're going to stick with it...When Austin Sachenbacher came in to play, he couldn't take his eyes off Dr. Thump's bass and, of course got a chance to see what it felt like to play it later on...Ted was jammin' so hard with him, too...there's just something about the Doc and his Upright...Scott Noble was all set up and joined in the first set on guitar and then, Austin got in on the jam! We had one major first set!
After a quick break, Taylor Laird got up and joined all of us playing guitar and singing some great tunes! He's such a fine performer and I know we'll be seeing alot more of him! He even gave me a break and sat in on keys for a few songs! Gotta love that! Did I mention that Scott can sing, too? He does "The Sultans Of Swing" - which is one of my favorites - and a few more...He promised to write up a quick chart of "Sultans" for me so I can play it with him next Sunday...I have this thing about playing back-up when I'm totally clueless...The guys I jam with are awesome and I just don't want to screw up while they're shining so brightly! And let me tell you, I was in the audience and these guys were SHININ"! Times like that, I'm not quite sure if I like listening or playing better - they're both so damn much FUN!!!...OK...yeah, playing when I'm not clueless...
THEN...a beautiful and talented singer/guitarist/songwriter named Susan, a friend of Scott's, got up and blew us all away! She and Scott are working on a recording project, and if last night's music was any indication, this is going to be a MUST for everyone's music collection! We jammed until we could jam no more! It was a wonderful night with lots of new music, old and new friends, and if you weren't there, don't fret too bad...we'll be back next Sunday at 7pm!!! As long as we have musicians and music lovers partying with us, the JAM WILL GO ON!!!
I've been invited back to the "Beal Street Bottle Club's Wednesday Night Blues Jam" again this week! Ed Mo and Gwen have got one excellent little spot going on! Bring your own bottle and get your set-ups there! It's too cool! Last week, I met so many new musicians and this week, there will be more! Can't wait!!! Due to the time change (hate when it gets dark so early!), the music will start at 8pm! Hope to see lots of you there!
Don't Forget about the "1st Annual Greater Gulf Coast Beer Fest" on Saturday at Uptown Staion, FWB!!! Blue Lew, Ted, Dr. Thump and I will be playing starting at 2pm and the weather's supposed to be perfect for music and beer drinking! There will also be food, arts, kid stuff...all the things that go with festivals! TOO MUCH FUN!!!
Thank all of you for being a part of the Emerald Coast Music Scene! I am one lucky lady to be able to play with these fabulous artists for such great folks! Y'all be safe and always remember to laugh alot, love more and live happy!
Love, Nora
